What does the course cover?

The NSW Department of Primary Industries’ (DPI) Hunter LEAP Firearms and Hunting Safety (Long-arms) Course presents the fundamentals of safe handling of firearms. The course meets the minimum requirements set out in the Firearms Act 1996 and has been approved by the NSW Police Force Firearms Registry.

The course has a theory as well as a practical component. The theory required for the course is contained in the NSW DPI Hunter LEAP Firearms and Hunting Safety (Long-arms) Guide. Candidates are encouraged to read the guide thoroughly before attending the face-to-face session with the accredited instructor.

How long does the Firearms and Hunting Safety (Long-arms) Course take?

The time taken to complete both the theory and practical components of the course will depend on the previous experience and knowledge of the individual candidate. A complete novice may need four to five hours to cover all material and assessments. A candidate who already has some knowledge of firearms safety may be able to complete the course and assessments in an hour.
